Bespoke Origin OI30 Internal Glazing – Chobham

The brief

CNJ Consultants required a glazed internal enclosure for a wine room positioned beneath the staircase as part of a wider residential project in Chobham.

The brief was to create a contemporary, steel-style glazed feature that would define the wine room without visually closing it away from the surrounding interior. The solution also needed to work precisely with the unusual geometry created by the descending staircase.

Design objectives

Create a bespoke glazed enclosure that followed the existing staircase geometry rather than fighting against it.

Maintain transparency into the wine room while giving the space a clear architectural identity.

Use the glazing bars and panel proportions to create a balanced composition across both the door and the angled fixed glazing.

Integrate the new installation cleanly with the surrounding high-spec interior finishes.

Why this specification

Cedar Views specified the Origin OI30 system to create the slim, black-framed internal glazing aesthetic required for the project.

Rather than treating the space beneath the staircase as a conventional rectangular opening, the screen was designed around the actual architecture. A full-height glazed door forms the entrance to the wine room, with adjoining fixed glazed sections following the descending line of the staircase.

The horizontal glazing bars were coordinated across the different sections to give the complete screen a consistent visual rhythm despite its irregular overall shape.

Technical & installation

The principal consideration was the bespoke geometry of the opening.

The overall screen measured approximately 2,490mm wide, with a maximum height of approximately 2,320mm, reducing to approximately 1,025mm beneath the staircase.

Accurate surveying and coordination of the angled head were therefore important to ensure the manufactured screen followed the staircase line correctly.

The door and adjoining fixed sections also needed to read as one complete installation, requiring careful consideration of the mullion positions, horizontal glazing bars and junctions between the individual elements.

Challenges

Unlike a standard rectangular internal screen, the available opening changed significantly in height across its width.

The challenge was therefore not simply to fill the opening, but to turn the irregular geometry into an intentional part of the design.

The angled glazed section follows the staircase while the repeated horizontal glazing bars bring order to the composition and visually connect the door with the adjoining fixed screens.

The outcome

The completed installation transforms an awkward space beneath the staircase into a distinctive architectural feature.

The black-framed OI30 glazing gives the wine room its own identity while maintaining views through the space and allowing it to remain connected with the wider interior.

It is a good example of how careful surveying, proportion and bespoke glazing design can turn an unconventional opening into one of the defining details of a project.
