As part of a complete refurbishment of this Kingswood home, tired white PVC windows were replaced with contemporary black aluminium glazing, transforming the appearance of the property and creating a much stronger connection with the garden.
The brief
After moving into the property, the homeowner undertook a complete refurbishment to modernise the house and make it her own.
An important part of the transformation was replacing the existing white PVC windows and doors. Black aluminium was selected to give the property a cleaner, more contemporary appearance, while larger areas of glazing to the rear help connect the principal living spaces with the garden.
The glazing package combines Origin OW70 aluminium windows and an OS-29 sliding door with a statement Kobbe entrance door.
The brief
The existing white PVC windows no longer suited the direction of the refurbished property. The brief was therefore about more than simply replacing old windows: the new glazing needed to become part of the overall architectural transformation.
A contemporary black finish was chosen throughout, creating a strong contrast against the existing brickwork and the darker areas of external cladding.
At the rear of the property, opening the principal living areas towards the garden was also important, with the glazing designed to provide larger areas of glass and a more contemporary relationship between the house, terrace and garden.
Design objectives
The objective was to create a consistent glazing scheme across a property with a mixture of traditional brickwork and newly refurbished elements.
Black aluminium frames provide a clear visual language throughout the elevations, replacing the appearance of the previous white PVC windows with slimmer, more defined framing.
To the rear, the larger glazed openings were intended to maximise views towards the garden and bring more of the outside into the principal living spaces.
At the entrance, the glazing specification needed to create a stronger sense of arrival and complement the contemporary treatment used elsewhere on the property.
Why this specification
Origin OW70 aluminium windows were selected for the window openings, providing the contemporary aluminium appearance required for the refurbishment.
For the principal rear living space, an Origin OS-29 sliding door was incorporated to create a substantially larger glazed opening overlooking the garden. Its restrained framing allows the glass and garden outlook to become the dominant feature of the opening.
The entrance was treated separately, with a Kobbe entrance door and glazed sidelights creating a strong architectural focal point at the front of the property.
Together, the different elements allow the glazing to respond to the individual requirements of each part of the house while maintaining a consistent contemporary character.
Technical & installation
The project involved replacing glazing across an existing property rather than working with a completely new building envelope, requiring the new windows and doors to be carefully integrated with the existing brickwork, cladding and openings.
The mixture of individual window configurations, larger glazed doors and the entrance arrangement required accurate surveying and coordination across the complete glazing package.
Particular attention was given to maintaining consistent sightlines and frame finishes throughout the property so that the different glazing elements read as one considered scheme rather than a collection of individual replacements.
The outcome
The completed glazing has played a significant role in changing the character of the property.
Replacing the tired white PVC windows with black aluminium has given the elevations a much cleaner and more contemporary appearance, while complementing both the original brickwork and the darker materials introduced during the refurbishment.
At the rear, the larger glazed openings create a much stronger visual connection between the living spaces, terrace and established garden.
The Kobbe entrance door completes the transformation at the front of the home, creating a distinctive entrance that reflects the quality and contemporary character of the wider refurbishment.
The result is a coherent glazing scheme that feels designed as part of the home rather than simply added as a replacement for the original windows.
