Residence R7 Windows & Doors – Guildford Renovation

The brief

Rob and Angie wanted to replace the existing windows and doors as part of the refurbishment of their Guildford home, while retaining the character of the property.

The new glazing needed to complement the existing brickwork, tile hanging and traditional proportions rather than introduce an overly modern appearance.

Design objectives

Create a consistent window design across the property that respected its traditional character.

The glazing layouts and astragal bar detailing were considered opening by opening, with a softer Painswick external finish chosen to sit naturally against the existing red brickwork and tile hanging.

Why this specification

Residence R7 was selected for the windows and French doors, finished in Painswick externally with Grained White internally.

Astragal bars were incorporated into selected window designs to reinforce the traditional appearance, while simpler configurations were used where appropriate. This allowed the different openings to work together without making every window identical.

Technical & installation

The project involved replacing multiple window and door configurations across the property, including casement windows and French doors of varying sizes.

The specification included different glazing arrangements, obscured glazing where required and ventilation incorporated into relevant openings.

Challenges

The key consideration was maintaining consistency across a property with a wide variety of window sizes, proportions and configurations.

Each opening needed to form part of the same overall design language while still responding appropriately to its position and function within the home.

The outcome

The Residence R7 windows and French doors provide a cohesive new appearance while remaining sympathetic to the character of the property.

The Painswick finish works particularly well with the existing red brick and tile hanging, while the carefully considered glazing bars help retain the traditional appearance Rob and Angie wanted.
